There are some rare £1 coins currently in circulation. These have the words ‘new pence’ on them. and they date from 1971 – 1981. There is a very rare batch of 2p pieces with the words ‘two pence’ on them from 1983. These could be worth up to £700 each. In February 1971 decimal 2p coins were introduced to legal tender. To avoid confusion between the old and new coinage, they had the word ‘new’ on them. This was removed in 1982, so all 2p coins before 1982 should say ‘new pence’ and all those after 1982 should say ‘two pence’. However, in 1983, a mistake led to a batch of 2p coins being printed with the old wording of ‘new pence’ on them. If you have a 1983 2p with ‘new pence’ on it, look after it properly. It is very rare and has previously been sold at auctions for £500 and £700. The 2p new pence coins from 1971 – 1981 are getting rarer each year. I currently have stocks of these 2p new pence coins on eBay.
